Every day the sun provides energy for us indirectly, as plants use it to produce food through photosynthesis. Through the food chain we use that energy to power and heat our bodies. However, we can use the Sun's energy, or solar energy, to power and heat other things. One way of using the Sun's energy is to directly raise the temperature of water and air. In a house with solar collectors, the sunlight raises the temperature of water Solar panels contain tubes of water that are heated by the Sun and are carried to a storage tank to be used in the house. Water heated in this way can reach temperatures of around 74 degrees Celsius [165 degrees Fahrenheit]
